Radiant Roots
Starting Oct. 19 • 1st and 3rd Mondays • Biweekly
Individuals living with mood disorders come from diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, religious, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This discussion group provides a space to explore how these experiences intersect with identity, mental health, and recovery in a culturally mixed and globalizing world.
Radiant Roots is a biweekly group discussing cross-culture, mixed race and ethnicity, mixed religious traditions, and third-culture issues, particularly for those who experienced such contexts or changes during their childhood and formative years.
Topics of cross-culture challenges are not unique to childhood and coming-of-age
years—though childhood experiences as such usually have a profound impact on adult life, mental health and identity.
Who is a cross-culture person, and for whom is this group?
According to Ruth Van Reken in the book Third-Culture Kids: growing up among worlds, cross culture individuals fall into several broad groups:
● Traditional Third-culture Kids (TCKs/Adult TCKs, grew up cross-culture internationally);
● Dometic TCKs (grew up cross-culture in the same country);
● Persons who grew up in military, diplomat, or missionary families;
● Children of immigrants;
● Children of minority groups;
● Children of refugees;
● Persons who grew up or are living with mixed religious traditions;
● Borderlanders (migrant farmworker families, work or live across international borders);
● International adoptees;
● Persons of mixed heritage;
● Bi- multi-cultural persons;
● Bi- multi-ethnic persons;
● Others.

Zube Khan
Radiant Roots Group Facilitator
Hi, my name is Zubeda Khan and my preferred name is Zube. My parents immigrated from India and I am a second generation immigrant. While being born and raised in the US, I had a very different cultural experience than the typical American. I also grew up in a very religious community. As for my background, I worked in the HR industry: specializing in HR systems and security. I'm an enthusiastic plant mom, and my hobbies include: going on long walks, hiking, trying new recipes, and creating artwork.
Jixi Janiver
Radiant Roots Group Facilitator
Hi, I'm Frankee "Jixi" Janivar. Throughout my childhood, our family relocated every year between my native Norway and the U.S. My first international move at 19 months took us to New York, but we moved many times after that between Norway, New York, Massachusetts, and California. Forever the "new kid in school," I juggled languages and cultures as we moved between Norway, New York, Massachusetts, and California. Forever the "new kid in school," I juggled languages, cultural norms, and friends. California's Central Coast is my home today, where I volunteer as a facilitator for DBSA California.
